Hey everyone! I'm Scott from HostGator and in this episode of 'Hosted', we will show you five things you can do to improve your site's search engine optimization, helping you rank higher on Google, and get more traffic. "What is search engine optimization?" "How do i get started?" "What are steps for a beginner?" are all phrases you'll see when you google SEO, because those articles are specifically written like that to show up at the top of your search results. In other words they've been optimized for search engines. Whoa inception! SEO is crucial. Seo is a crucial consideration when building and maintaining your website, and here are five things you can do to help get you ranked. Number one! Include relevant keywords. What kind of animal can unlock a door? A monkey. Okay got that one from a joke book circa 1992. I regret nothing. The goal with including keywords is to connect your buyer's intent with your brand. So you should include words and phrases in your articles, descriptions, titles and really any text on your site that might match what your customers are searching for. This will help search engines serve your content to people searching for it. Number two! Create SEO friendly urls. url not to be confused with Carson Daily's TRL is the address of a site or page you type into the url bar at the top of your browser. Makes sense right? The file name portion of url is the last part that indicates what page on your site you are accessing. This is the section to pay close attention to. Keep file name simple and short between two and four words is best and don't include every preposition. Who needs them? It's also best practice to use hyphens in place of spaces, and all lowercase letters. These few simple things will help clean up your url file names, making them more readable and SEO friendly. Man urls, funny. A lot of good fodder in this. Good stuff. (Sad Trumpet Noises) Number three! Optimize your images. Optimizing your images is good practice anyway, but it also helps with SEO. The key here is that optimized images equal longer page visits. A key indicator for
Search engines that a site should be indexed higher in search results.
search engines that a site should be indexed higher in search results. Images that are appropriately sized and compressed to minimize file size will help speed up load times. This will keep visitors on your page for longer. I don't care how good you think your site is. If an image loads slowly, like it's 1995 dial up, people won't care. We're busy! We don't have time for that dial up nonsense. Swipe left on that dial up! Limiting stock images will also help with visit time, as original and specific images will feel more organic and engaging. Also using images means you can use captions, and captions are a form of text. As we learned earlier, text is a great opportunity to optimize for search engines, with keywords! Very good. When it comes to SEO, optimized images are our friend. Huh? Hi friend. Number four! Add meta tags. If you have a site that talks about meta tags, you should tag meta tags in your meta tags. Meta meta tag tags. Inception again! Leo! I love Leo. Meta tags are html elements used to identify your pages in search engines. Title tags and meta descriptions are two of the most important meta tags. Title tags should include the main keywords of your page. Keep it short. Aiming for less than 50 characters. Your meta description should give a more specific and direct reason a person should click into your site, and be between 135 and 150 characters. Similar to optimizing keywords, meta tags should be written with the customer in mind. What are they looking for, and what would make them know you have it? And finally number five. Write helpful content. Page visit duration and shareability are two fundamental components of good SEO practices. Visitor behavior, as analyzed by the search engine algorithms, are indicators of how your pages should be ranked. Original, authentic, captivating content is key to attracting a new girlfriend, as well as new and returning visitors to your website. And just like dating, the longer you can remain original, authentic and captivating, the longer your relationship will last,
And the longer your visitors will stay. You're welcome. Structure will help too.
and the longer your visitors will stay. You're welcome. Structure will help too. When visitors land on a page, they should immediately be served what they're looking for. No need to bury the lede. Give them an answer, then extrapolate to provide more useful information. And finally be original. Serve content that visitors can't get anywhere else. Limit your quoting of other articles on the internet. "Try conducting your own research, or obtaining quotes from industry experts." Totally my words not stolen from a HostGator article. And there you have it. These five simple practices will help your site get ranked higher on search engines. In our next episode, the top five jokes from my 1992 joke book. I'm a professional folks. What SEO tricks do you use? What's your favorite joke book joke? Let us know in the comments below. What other kind of animal can unlock a door? A donkey. No a human! A human can unlock a door. We invented doors. Dogs can open dog doors.
