what's up everyone welcome to the Surfside PPC YouTube channel today I'm gonna be doing my Google search console tutorial for 2020 it was also previously referred to as Google Webmaster Tools but ultimately what its gonna do is allow you to track how your website is performing in the Google search results so if you haven't signed up for search console yet it's completely free you can easily verify your website with Google search console using Google Analytics using Google tag manager or doing it directly where you have your domain name registered so to get started what you can do is come here to google.com slash webmasters so if you go there you're gonna see this button right here for search console this is where you can access your Google search console account if you have a Google account already then you can easily access this here you're just have to do a quick setup for your account and then you just sign in and all you need to do is add your website property and verify it now before I get into the search console and I'm gonna go over every little detail of the search console and how to verify your website as well but before we get into it what I want to do is go over what the Google search

console is and some of the benefits of using the Google search console so first here improve your performance on Google search so reports to measure your website's search traffic and performance fix issues and make your website shine in Google search results so that's a high-level overview you can actually see how your website is performing in the Google search results optimize your content with search analytics so you can see what's actual search queries or bringing people to your website analyze your website's impressions clicks position and click through rate on Google search submit your sitemaps and individual URLs for crawling so if you want to make sure that Google is completely up-to-date with all the pages on your website you can submit your sitemap and you can submit specific URLs if you just create a new page get alerted on issues and fix your website so Google will show you some of the technical issues with your website some warnings that you want to fix and then they'll actually show you errors as well so I have some errors in my account so I'll show you those usually when I see errors those are what I'm trying to fix as fast as I possibly can to make sure that I'm not being dragged down in the

Entercom you can see I have all my website's here I have them all in the same account so you could do that easily by going through your settings page so for here in farmhouse Cole's we come down to the bottom you're gonna see settings down here and once you're in here you're gonna see ownership verification so I'm a verified owner users and permission so you would come here to add any additional Google accounts to be able to access your account or to give full control over your account if they you actually give them authorization to make changes in your Google search console account so that could be really useful if you're working with the team or if you're working with clients and you want them to maintain ownership of all their accounts you can actually just get permission to access their account and then use that data as you're improving their search engine optimization efforts so what we're gonna do first is I'm gonna show you how to add a property so you would come here to the property list and you're gonna click on add property when you create a Google search console account for the first time your main page will probably tell you to add a property right here so you're not gonna have any overview here you're not gonna have any of these tabs you're gonna make sure that you have to add your property

first so you would click on this drop down here click on add property and then you're gonna see we can either add a property with a domain or you could use a URL prefix I would recommend just using a domain at this point so that's how I have my website floor Jack's Entercom authorized through the Google search console so all you need to do is enter your domain here so let's just say sample dome calm click on continue okay so what it's saying is verified domain ownership via a DNS record so it's gonna say instructions for any DNS provider if we click on the drop down here there's some really popular DNS providers but what you need to do is sign in to your domain name provider so wherever you purchase your domain name let's just say you're using GoDaddy for example and then you want to take this record right here you're gonna copy it and then you're gonna add the txt record into your DNS zone editor your DNS configuration so this is probably the easiest way to make sure Google has all of the data about your domain in the Google search results

benefits about using Google Analytics is you can make sure that your Google Analytics and your Google search console accounts are linked so what you would do is if you have analytics already installed on your website which you should so I'm open my analytics account here for for mouse goals I'm in the admin screen so we're here in admin what you can do under product linking is come to all products and you're gonna see Google Adsense Google ads and then search console so with this if I click on adjust link it's going to say enable two views one view selected and right now I have my website linked in Google search console and Google analytics so this gives me additional data about my website in my Google Analytics account so when you're getting started and you're adding your property if you don't want to go through this domain name provider method I would just highly recommend using the analytics or tag manager methods that you can also use and then it would just show here ownership verification you're a verified owner my website is completely verified if it's not it will tell give you an error that your website is not ready to collect data from the Google search

console yet but once you have it all connected then what you can do is go to your analytics account make sure in this over here and product linking under the admin screen under property you come to all products and you make sure that it's linked in here because what you can do then is you can come to this acquisition and you're gonna see search console here and I could just click on landing pages and it'll give me data about how my website is performing in the Google search results so right now I'm just looking at March 1st to March 19th if we come down you can see some of my top landing pages in terms of impressions clicks click-through rate average position sessions bounce rate so you can see how your website is performing in the Google search results directly in your Google Analytics account now one thing to keep in mind is if we come over here and you're just we're just looking at March and you see clicks so my clicks are around 3,000 in March showing from the search console if I come to all traffic and we click on channels you're gonna see my main source of traffic for this website is organic search so if we click here on organic search and then we come up here to the top and click on

source it's showing that we have about 8,000 clicks from Google so a little over 8,000 so the data you're getting from search console isn't gonna include every single last click that's going to your website but it will include a lot of clicks and you're gonna be able to see how your website is performing in the Google search results so that's where we want to get started so let's come back over here to the Google search console should be very easy to verify your website go into settings here if you sign into search console for the first time you're gonna see it right here they're gonna tell you to verify a website property and once you do that you're gonna start getting some data for your website now it might take a couple of days to start getting some data so if you come in here to performance and you don't see anything it might say not enough data please check back later it might take two or three days for that data to actually come in here now what I want to do to get to start in this overview screen so when you sign into Google search console you look at overview you're gonna see performance you're gonna see coverage keep scrolling down we're gonna see some enhancements so this is where you can see some of your errors and some of the errors that I have for my own website so

I think I just fix this logos error but we'll see about that but essentially what we want to do is start in this overview screen you can see the main things from the search console how your website is performing how your website is indexed and then any enhancements with your indexing or with your actual website user experience is going to show up right here so we're gonna come down over here to performance so we started an overview we're gonna click on performance so this is gonna expand this section here and you're gonna see it's gonna show search type web last three months so over the last three months with farmhouse kohls.com I've driven fourteen point eight thousand clicks according to Google search console I've had one point five nine million total impressions in the Google search results my average click-through rate pretty low for this website is zero point nine percent in my average position in the google search results is thirty one point six if we scroll down we can see search queries here so it's going to show our top search queries by clicks we can click to see our top by impressions if we keep scrolling down you can see there's essentially an unlimited amount of data
One to ten out of 1,000 so you're gonna be able to see the top 1.

one to ten out of 1,000 so you're gonna be able to see the top 1,000 search queries that are driving traffic to your website so if I just come over here to 250 and I look at the top by impressions what we can see is if we keep scrolling down you can find some of these different keywords here radon dog bowls coal or farmhouse sink you can see some of the search queries that your website's actually ranking for and if we scroll to the top up here we can actually click on average click-through rate an average position so just a quick insight we can get is by looking at some of these search queries with a lot of impressions with a poor average position so let's just use this right here farmhouse bedding average position eighteen point four farmhouse chandelier twenty-one point four and you're seeing I don't have a ton of clicks here so it's not too bad but I'm getting a lot of impressions so if I can improve my average position for these search queries then it's probably gonna help me drive additional traffic to my website every single month so these are some of the insights that you can get from the performance screen there's essentially an endless amount of data so if we click on pages here this will

actually show us our top pages in the search results and again if depending on what you want to look at you can just click on these statistics up here at the top generally the main things that I'm looking for are clicks impressions and average position and then average click-through rate I don't worry as much about it even though I know it is important to improve my click-through rate but ultimately what I'm trying to do is find the search terms find the pages that are getting a lot of impressions where I can find some optimization opportunities by increasing my average position now if we scroll down for pages you're gonna see my top pages by clicks by impressions so if we just look at impressions you're gonna see farmhouse Christmas signs and wall decor farmhouse Christmas ornaments so I've gotten a lot of people to my website from Christmas related search terms over the last three months and really mainly in November in December but that's kind of carried out over a little bit cuz my rankings are pretty good for for most Christmas decorations so you're gonna see some of these top pages buy impressions now what I like to look for is if I can find something with a lot of impressions here and not a lot

of clicks so this is where you can look at the click-through rate then what I know is that there's search terms driving traffic to this page that I can create a better page for most likely so let's click on this individual page here and what its gonna do it's gonna set that page as a filter at the top so we have our page as a filter at the top if we scroll down you're gonna see pages here what we can actually do is look at queries and look at the actual search terms that are driving people to this page so you're gonna see the main query here that's driving a lot of impressions is just ray done so I actually found this already in my data and what I've done is I've gone to my website I've created a page specifically for radon products that just lists all the different subcategories all the different categories of radon products so hopefully that page starts to rank higher than this page and there's ways I can tell Google to rank my radon page using a canonical URL but this is just one of the benefits of using the Google search console is you can set pages up here at the top as filters you can come up here to the top and set specific search queries as filters you can look

farmhouse shelves so what we can see is the last three months are the three months that just happened the three previous three months are the three months before that so you can see my impressions have gone way up across the board for all of these different search terms so hopefully that's gonna help me keep driving more and more clicks back to my website so just one way to look at your data and one way to kind of look at if you've improved a lot of your content for specific keywords like I just previously improved a lot of my content based around farmhouse shelves I'm starting to see more and more clicks from the Google search results and hopefully I can keep increasing this number my average click-through rate really isn't that great so that's something if I can improve my average click-through rate a little bit then I can continue to drive more and more traffic back to my website so in the performance you can essentially see anything you want to about specific search queries about specific pages you can compare data so you can see I've increased clicks from the last three months compared to the previous three months and if I look at a larger sample size let's just say compare the last six

months I've really increased my clicks of this website and a lot of the data that I use is just right here in the Google search console previous six months I only drove four point three three thousand clicks and then in the last six months I've driven almost 29,000 clicks so a major major increase and you can just see it right here a lot more 2.8 million compared to 383 thousand so I'm driving a lot more organic search traffic for this website and ultimately what I'm trying to do is six months from now hopefully I can get this number up to fifty thousand so if I can keep increasing this over time it means that I'm just driving more and more relevant traffic back to my website so this is the performance screen I would say this is where I spend the majority of my time in the Google search console you can find all sorts of data here whether you want to look at the last seven days right here you want to look at the last 12 months the last 28 days you can find all of that data you can look at specific dates just for this month if you want to so you can see over the last 28 days four point five nine thousand clicks five hundred one thousand

impressions and we're seeing a little bit of growth here so we started over here seventeen thousand impressions now we're at twenty thousand impressions so hopefully we can keep increasing those impressions increasing those clicks so that's performance I mean it's really gonna help you learn a lot more about your website what's performing well especially as you continue to optimize for more and more keywords so I optimize for the keywords related around farmhouse bedding several months ago and I'm already seeing a lot of clicks driven back to this page for our mouse bedding and a lot of different clicks to some of the other farmhouse bedding pages on my website if we look at my top fifty pages you can see a lot of these different pages here are pages that I've specifically optimized so I can drive more and this search engine traffic to my website so if you're seeing pages in here that are driving a lot of clicks there's always something you can learn from them and that's why I think it's so important to make sure that you're looking at this data seeing what your top pages are your top search queries and finding just areas of opportunities so you can continue to learn more and

more about how your website is performing in the Google search results now you can export this data over here what we can also do is come down here to pages and instead of looking at the last 28 days let's look at compare again and we'll look at the last three months to the previous period so one of the things is if we scroll down here you're gonna see last three months clicks last previous three months clicks we can click right here and we can actually look at filters so we can look at differences in the clicks we can look at differences in the impressions so let's just say I want to look at pages that have law impressions so what I would do is say smaller than zero so if my difference from the last three months clicks or the last three months impressions to the previous three months impressions is smaller than zero that means we actually had a negative difference so if we're looking right here you can see we have a negative difference for this specific page but it's radon Christmas so that makes a lot of sense the search volume drops for that search term in general from the holiday season until now so I came to the top here and I'm just gonna remove clicks so we're just looking at

impressions and now you can see the difference here and we can actually rank it by difference so if we're looking at the biggest differences you can see I've lost a lot of impressions for farmhouse dining tables so anything Christmas related I'm making this video in March so I'm obviously gonna lose a lot of search traffic from Christmas related search queries that's not something I really worry about too much now some of these pages where I'm losing impressions and it's going all the way to zero that just means that a different page is probably starting to rank for the search query that was driving the majority of traffic to this specific page or it means this page was removed my website altogether so it's not something I worry about really too much if I'm seeing something go from thousands to zero unless it's a page that I'm really focused on then it probably means that that page actually lost its index in the Google search results I'll show you how to look that up in a minute now looking at these biggest negative differences for impressions and for clicks is a great way to find areas of opportunity so for this I need to come in and improve this best farmhouse dining tables page clearly I've lost some

I spend 90% of my time when I'm in here so when I do look at the Google search console I focus mainly on performance so that's what this video is gonna focus on as well now one thing we can do is a URL inspection so I kind of went over this previously if you see that one of your pages is getting zero impressions you can just enter it here so we'll use farmhouse shelves as our example and the Google index will actually give us an inspection in real time of that URL and show us any errors that we have so URL is on Google but has issues so if the page is not indexed we can click here and request indexing we can test the live URL up here at the top but what I like to do coverage submitted in index so it doesn't look like this page is being hurt really in the Google search results but I do have some warnings so accelerate a mobile page version let's see so it's saying it's eligible for some AM specific features in Google search results but not fully compliant with amp best practices AM P stands for accelerated mobile pages so you want to make sure you're not having any issues here I have image size is

smaller than the recommended size so what you can actually see over here is the crawled page we can look at the HTML and see where the exact error is occurring now if this isn't something that you're comfortable working with I would highly recommend hiring a developer you can hire a temporary developer on upwork.com or you can hire a full-time developer if your website is large enough and you're seeing a lot of these errors usually I try to fix these errors myself I have hired outside help in terms of a freelancer to fix some of these issues that I've had in the past but what I'd like to do is use URL inspection to find any of these errors now the main errors I'm having right now are accelerated mobile pages and logos so logos I believe I just fix this issue using a wordpress plugin but what we can see here is it's saying one invalid item detected unnamed item missing field URL when I come here it's showing my URL so I don't see what the air is there saying alternate name farmhouse goals name farmhouse goals I have an unnamed item so it's an issue that I

showing this error so there's no downside to actually getting Google to validate any of the fixes that you make so that's overview that's performance that's URL inspection so next we're gonna come down here to index so this is where you can find some of the indexing issues for your website in google you can submit your sitemap here and you can actually request removals as well so this is where I really focus on not having any errors so you can see I only have one error not a big issue twenty four point four thousand valid and then excluded so I've actually excluded these pages myself but if we come in here to valid everything looks good we can see valid submitted indexed how many pages indexed not submitted in sitemap so I can go through some of those issues submitted URL has crawl issue so if I look at this we can try to find the error it's showing this part number so this is actually not something I want to be indexed at all so what I can do is just click on validate fix it should be able to go through and fix this issue and I shouldn't have any coverage issues at all so that's coverage you don't

really want to have any issues with coverage because that means that some of your website pages are actually not getting in in Google now next is gonna be sitemap so my sitemap is directly through Yoast SEO so all I have to do is enter sitemap underscore index dot XML here and click on submit and I submitted this September 25th 2018 last read today status is success discovered URL over 23,000 so you want to submit your sitemap to Google because then Google is able to actually look at every single page on your website they're able to see the structure of your pages and when you create a lot of new content they're able to easily see what content you created through your sitemap so this might be one of the first things that you want to do when you do create your Google search console account and usually they'll give you five steps to do when you do create your account and one of them is gonna be to submit your sitemap so mine is just completely free through Yoast SEO regardless of the website provider you're using if you're running a Shopify website maybe you've created a Wix

not showing any enhancements so if I come over here and we're gonna come back to farmhouse goals com what we can do is start here with speed and with speed you can see I have a lot of slow URLs here sixty-nine moderate URLs zero fast URLs so it's gonna split it by mobile and desktop so this is an issue that I need to work on it's showing that my website is too slow right now and it's gonna eventually hinder my rate rankings so if we click on mobile here we're gonna open the report what we can do is look at our slow URLs so essentially anything that takes longer than three seconds to load is gonna be marked as a slow URL so if I click here it's gonna pull up individual pages that are taking longer than three seconds to load so for these there's two different pages here and they're 3.8 seconds so I need to improve this to improve my mobile speed to improve my desktop speed as well so if we come down here to desktop we click on open report and what we're gonna see again longer than three seconds same exact error and again with these pages so for the most part everything is loading pretty well my home page is at five point eight seconds

amp HTML tag has an invalid layout specified by its attributes it's an issue I've tried to fix for the last year and I haven't been able to do it on my own I fixed it on some pages but not on all my pages so I have a lot of valid pages here I have some valid with warnings so this is another area I need to improve now next is gonna be breadcrumbs so if we click on breadcrumbs you can see four point three 9k valid now let's look at the valid here real quick and we can look at complete items so if we click here incomplete items gonna say status valid for breadcrumbs let's say you're not sure what breadcrumbs are at all what you can do here is click on learn more and it's gonna open up the developer's Google Docs and you can actually look a breadcrumb trail on a page indicates the pages position in the site hierarchy so for example if I have specific pages in categories maybe I have a category for a beach living room decor and then within that category is beach area rugs or beach sofas or something along those lines then that breadcrumb would actually be in the hierarchy of the page

clicks what's driving impressions and even just quick little things you can look at all this data look at your top search queries by impressions try to find where your average position is bad we are click-through rate isn't that great so something like raid on Christmas I have a 2% click-through rate if I can get my entire Google search console this for this website up to a two percent click-through rate it would double my clicks so that's why it's important to optimize for all these different statistics mainly I focus on clicks and impressions but click-through rate and average position definitely play an important role you can look at different dates here you can compare dates so if you're trying to show some growth we're trying to show growth to a client it's a great place to come to compare if you've been working for three months kind of how well you've been able to improve some of those rankings to drive more clicks and impressions so that's the Google search console there's a lot more that you can do with it but this is a good high-level overview again you can access a lot of this data in Google Analytics just come to acquisition search console and you can look at landing pages devices search queries you can see what your top landing pages are
