hello my name is Angela Bayer and I'm an SEO consultant for small businesses in this video I'm going to show you how to create filters to remove specific countries or only show specific countries in your Google Analytics account the reason why I'm doing this is because as a small business SEO consultant they typically don't receive a lot of traffic to their website and so when they do get hit by some spam attacks it really throws off percentage-wise they are graphs and and their visits so I'll give you an example here we have one where here's a baseline which is very low and then all of a sudden we have a big spike and when we go down to see what that spike is and we'll filter here by country we'll see United States and Canada which is appropriate but then Indonesia and India and all these other countries are not appropriate for this website and so what we need to do is
Filter that out so that it doesn't show up in our graphs anymore the way to do...

filter that out so that it doesn't show up in our graphs anymore the way to do that is to go to admin and come to this side and go to filters and we'll add a filter so the first filter I will show you is how to remove a specific country so if you're getting a lot of hits from Russia or from China we will pick a specific country to filter out so create a new filter and in my case it was Indonesia so I will name it something that I'll know what it is and then we'll come to custom exclude in the select field we will write country or you can scroll down and find it but it's easier to type it and we're going to type in Indonesian
Now you don't have to click anything else if you come down to verify this...
02:02
now you don't have to click anything else if you come down to verify this filter it'll show you what it would have done for the past week if it was active so it would have filtered out this amount of sessions and so when everything looks good that way we can hit save and now going forward when you go to your reporting Indonesia will not be in your Google Analytics data now I'm going to show you how to include only one country so let's say you're a very local business your dentist or a lawyer or whatever and you don't really care about any of the other countries you're in the United States and so we're going to add a filter create a new filter and we're going to write United States only and again custom but this time we're
Going to come down to include okay include same thing country come down to location country...
03:02
going to come down to include okay include same thing country come down to location country good and now we're going to write United States and we're going to click verify this filter again and you'll see everything that would have been filtered out if this was active so it's basically taking out every other country except United States and then you can hit save so now going forward when we come to our reporting any visits to your website that is being tracked by Google Analytics will not show up unless they are coming from the United States however past visits are still going to be showing up if you don't want to see past visits anymore you have to create what's called a segment so we're going
To create a segment and they have some predetermined segments here but they...
04:04
to create a segment and they have some predetermined segments here but they don't have one for country yet so what we'll need to do is press new segment and depending on what you want to do if you want to include or exclude so let's say you still want to go with our first example we want to exclude a specific country let's say again you're getting hit by Russian or Chinese BOTS so you hit advance conditions we're going to exclude in this field type country contains so basically I'm excluding everything from India so now in this preview basically it's showing me all these are good and this is what would be filtered out and you can hit save and
Then you'll be okay now if we want to I'm going to cancel if we want to only...
05:11
then you'll be okay now if we want to I'm going to cancel if we want to only show United States we'll come back again and hit AG segment new segment and we can go on the easier place of in your main demographics area go to location and we can write country contains United States and it's going to show me in blue here only this amount of traffic came from United States and so if I hit save again forgot the name u.s. segment us only save okay so there
We go here and it will show us anything that was only from United States and...
06:16
we go here and it will show us anything that was only from United States and that's how you add a filter going forward and that's how you add a segment basically segmenting your data into parts and so now it only shows United States data so I hope this has helped you understand a little bit of Google Analytics and how to specifically choose specific countries to show up there thank you very much for watching
